This is our 100th blog post. In the grand scheme of things it’s a small achievement, but we wanted to mark the moment and reflect on what we’ve learned.
We truly want to help amplify our physicians’ voices and let them provide thoughtful leadership in medicine. Our M.D.s can periodically feel drowned out by patients, medical administrators, government officials, and lay people with a sometimes-skewed medical agenda. This is a platform where they can be heard and ideas can be discussed with input from all levels of medicine.
Our Physician Polls
What better way to find out what our doctors think than to ask them? From how many health apps they have on their smart phones, to how physicians approach obesity with their patients, we ask doctors what they think about the issues of the day.
As we move forward we will continue to ask questions that will highlight physician opinion. We hope to shed light about what happens in the exam room and how we can improve medical outcomes by sharing information.
Spreading The Word
We were very successful when we shared information about influenza this season, not only from our physicians forecasting the illness, but also in warning others in the medical community about the increase in Swine Flu. Physicians inside Sermo sounded the alarm and we helped spread the information online. The result was an increase in knowledge among health care practitioners and quite a few lay people deciding to get the flu shot this year.
The Changing Business of Medicine
Practice management has changed significantly over the past two years. The Affordable Care Act is now in place, cash-only physicians are growing rapidly, and almost everyone is struggling with EHRs. Our physicians face a lot of changes in their businesses as they plan for retirement, hire a management team, or create an online presence to attract patients.
Helping Others
At the core of every doctor’s being is the desire to help others. We see a lot of passion inside Sermo when an organization or fellow physician needs a helping hand. To that end we have partnered with Floating Doctors, helping them boost awareness and raise money for a much-needed clinic in Panama where they help thousands of patients each year. Their work is inspiring and the Sermo community has embraced them. We will continue to work with them in 2014 and you’ll see other charity work added as well.
As we look forward to the next 100 posts, even the next 1,000 posts, we hope you’ll continue to read us and enjoy the ride. We are committed to our physicians, to having their voices heard not just in the U.S. but globally, and to improving medicine for everyone, the patient and the doctor. If you’re an M.D. or D.O. our online physicians would love to meet you please join us inside Sermo.
